Arkansas Highway 9: Mountain View to Melbourne

Take a drive through the rugged heart of north-central Arkansas as we journey 25 miles along Arkansas Highway 9, from Mountain View to Melbourne. This stretch of Highway 9 showcases the raw beauty of the Ozark Mountains—twisting, climbing, and unfolding through steep hills, forested hollows, and quiet rural communities.

We begin our ride just east of downtown Mountain View, where AR-9 shares the pavement with both Highway 5 and Highway 14. Mountain View itself is a hub of Ozark culture—home to the Ozark Folk Center State Park, the Mountain View Music Festival, and a well-loved town square that celebrates traditional music and crafts year-round. As we leave this lively little town behind, our route follows the Sylamore Creek toward the small community of Allison. There, Highway 9 parts ways with its concurrency, veering northeast to begin a demanding climb into the highlands.

From Allison, the route tackles Polk Mountain, one of the more challenging and scenic parts of the drive. With hairpin curves, elevation changes, and dense canopies overhead, this portion of AR-9 makes for a thrilling ride—especially for motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts. There are few services here, but plenty of nature: lush oak and pine forests, clear creeks cutting through hollows, and occasional glimpses down the steep slopes into the valleys below. As we top the climb and approach Brandenburg, the curves begin to ease up and the landscape opens into more level terrain.

Crossing into Izard County, the road begins to straighten out. The terrain transitions to a blend of rolling hills and patchwork farmland, framed by dense treelines and punctuated by scattered homesteads. This part of the drive is more relaxed, but no less scenic. Travelers will notice the Ozark Highlands gradually giving way to gentler terrain, hinting at the edge of the Plateau region. Just west of Melbourne, AR-9 makes a gentle eastward bend, signaling our approach to town.

As we enter Melbourne, the largest town in Izard County, the surroundings take on a more developed feel—but still hold onto a distinct rural charm. The route passes through a spur junction and leads into the center of town, where it ends at an intersection with Arkansas Highway 69. Melbourne is home to Ozarka College, a key educational and cultural institution for the region. If you’re in the area, take a moment to explore the town’s small businesses or grab a bite before heading on your way.

Whether you’re making this drive as a scenic detour or simply passing through, Arkansas Highway 9 between Mountain View and Melbourne is a great example of the diverse beauty found in the Natural State. With rugged climbs, peaceful valleys, and authentic Ozark towns, this is a road worth remembering.
