Arkansas Highway 309: Mt. Magazine Scenic Byway – Havana to Paris

If you’re looking for one of Arkansas’s most iconic scenic drives, Arkansas Highway 309—better known as the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway—is hard to beat. Stretching roughly 31 miles from Havana to Paris, this route isn’t just a way to get from point A to point B. It’s a journey that puts you right in the heart of the Natural State’s mountain beauty, rolling through dense forest, climbing the highest peak in Arkansas, and finishing in the classic small-town setting of Paris.

We kick things off in Havana, a tiny town nestled on the northern edge of the Ouachita Mountains, right where AR-10 meets AR-309. Heading north out of town, the landscape transitions quickly from wide, open fields to a forested approach as we start climbing toward Mount Magazine State Park. The ascent up Mount Magazine is a highlight all on its own—this is Arkansas’s highest point, after all, rising to 2,753 feet above sea level. The road winds through several switchbacks, giving you those jaw-dropping views down into the Petit Jean River Valley and, on a clear day, even further afield. Expect sweeping vistas at every turn, and don’t be surprised if you spot hawks or even the occasional hang glider launching from the mountain’s southern bluffs.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll find yourself in Mount Magazine State Park—a real gem for anyone who loves the outdoors. Here, you can pull off for a break at the park lodge, check out the visitor center, or even take a short hike along the Signal Hill Trail to the actual summit marker. The lodge itself boasts one of the best overlooks in Arkansas, with sweeping views west across Blue Mountain Lake and the River Valley. There are picnic areas, campsites, and, if you have time, a variety of scenic overlooks and short trails that are worth exploring—even if you’re just passing through. If wildflowers are your thing, spring and early summer are especially colorful up here.

Leaving the state park, Highway 309 continues its scenic run northward. The descent is gentler but still gives you some stunning views, especially as you roll past Cove Creek. This little spot is a good place for a quick stop or fuel if you need it, but most travelers are here for the scenery. Continuing north, you’ll pass the tranquil waters of Cove Lake, another popular spot for picnics, fishing, and camping. The Byway skirts the edge of the lake, and you’ll likely see people enjoying the water or heading out on one of the nearby hiking trails. All the while, the thick forests of the Ozark National Forest create a canopy overhead, making the drive especially gorgeous in fall when the leaves start to turn.

As you finish your descent, Highway 309 eventually meets AR-109 at the base of the mountain. From here, you’ll turn right to continue north, soon rolling into Paris—a classic small Arkansas town with a historic courthouse square. If you’re hungry, the square and surrounding blocks offer a few local diners and coffee shops that make for a perfect end to your drive. Paris is also home to its own “Eiffel Tower” replica (complete with a fountain), and the old Logan County Courthouse is worth a quick look.

Whether you’re here for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or just chasing some of the best mountain views in the state, the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway along AR-309 is a route you’ll want to return to in every season.
