If you’re looking for a true backroad Arkansas experience just outside of Little Rock, Kanis Road from Ferndale to Paron is a route that delivers. This 13-mile stretch takes us west from the rolling outskirts of Ferndale, deep into the wooded, hilly landscapes that define the transition from Pulaski County’s suburban edge to the rugged heart of Saline County.
Our drive begins in Ferndale, a small community that serves as a gateway to both peaceful rural living and outdoor adventure. Heading out on Kanis Road, we quickly leave behind any traces of the city. The scenery shifts to thick forests on both sides, occasional meadows, and glimpses of small ponds and creeks—classic Central Arkansas countryside. The road itself is winding, with several curves and changes in elevation that keep things interesting for drivers and make this a favorite stretch for local motorcyclists and weekend explorers.
Along the way, there aren’t any towns or major attractions, but that’s really the appeal—this drive is about soaking in the natural beauty and catching sight of rustic homesteads, old barns, and the occasional deer darting across the road. Kanis Road crosses several branches of Fourche Creek, and during spring and after rains, you might notice small waterfalls and high water in the ditches. If you’re into hiking or want a quick stop, the nearby Ouachita National Forest is accessible by a network of gravel roads branching south from Paron, giving plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities just off the main route.
As we approach Paron, the road continues its twisting path through forested hills. Paron itself is a small, quiet community, but it marks the end of the maintained section of Kanis Road and the gateway to deeper adventures in the Ouachitas. If you want to keep exploring, Paron connects to AR-9 and further south into even wilder territory.
