Starting at the southern edge of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), we head north on University Avenue for roughly two miles, tracing one of the busiest arterial routes in the city. This section of University Avenue serves not just as a link between the college and the central freeway system, but also as a commercial and residential spine for central Little Rock. As we depart the UALR entrance, the four-lane road carries us past student housing, small businesses, and a handful of fast-food chains catering to both commuters and college life. On either side, the Broadmoor and Point O’Woods neighborhoods quietly anchor the corridor with mid-century homes and mature trees, tucked just far enough back to avoid the hum of traffic.
Continuing northbound, the urban density begins to subtly increase. Strip malls, office buildings, and long-standing service stations become more frequent as we approach 12th Street. This busy intersection is a key crossroad for east-west travel through the heart of Little Rock and marks a transition point from residential margins to a more defined commercial corridor. Just before the intersection, you’ll spot the remnants of some older developments alongside newer infill, showing how the area has been evolving with the city’s growth.
Beyond 12th Street, University Avenue presses ahead for another few blocks toward its interchange with Interstate 630, the city’s east-west expressway. This final stretch of the drive is framed by government offices, larger institutional buildings, and medical clinics, hinting at the proximity of War Memorial Park and the Midtown medical district just a few blocks north. We end our route by turning east onto I-630, where University Avenue narrows briefly to accommodate the ramps and merges that define this busy freeway junction.
