Interstate 40: Knoxville to Lebanon – Tennessee

Take a scenic ride through the diverse landscapes of central Tennessee as we follow Interstate 40 west from Kodak to Lebanon. This 155-mile journey carries us from the outer edges of the Great Smoky Mountains to the rolling farmlands approaching Nashville, weaving together natural beauty, vibrant cityscapes, and quiet rural stretches in a memorable cross-state experience.

We begin our westbound trip at the bustling interchange with Tennessee State Route 66 in Kodak, the gateway to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and the iconic Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Almost immediately, we settle into a rhythm of gentle hills and open valleys, where the last whispers of the Smokies blend into the broader Tennessee Valley. As we approach Knoxville, the road broadens, and the scenery transitions from pastoral to suburban, signaling our entry into one of Tennessee’s most significant urban centers.

Knoxville offers a vibrant detour should we choose to leave the highway, but our path carries us directly through the heart of the city. Skirting past the northern bypass of Interstate 640, we instead cruise along the mainline of I-40, crossing the confluence of the Holston and French Broad Rivers where they join to form the mighty Tennessee River. Iconic Knoxville interchanges flash by—U.S. Highway 441 (Broadway), Interstate 275 toward North Knoxville, and finally the major merge with Interstate 75, where both routes combine forces westward. The pulse of the city fades as we glide past shopping centers, residential suburbs, and the rolling terrain of Farragut before reaching Loudon County, where I-75 peels away south toward Chattanooga, and we continue west.

From Loudon County, we reenter a more natural setting. The highway gently curves along the lush banks of the Clinch River, crossing Watts Bar Lake, offering brief but striking vistas of the water shimmering below. Kingston’s quaint riverside charm makes an appearance before we press on, the road steadily climbing into the Cumberland Plateau. Here, the landscape grows wilder, with dense woods and rocky outcrops forming the backdrop as the highway gains elevation.

Atop the plateau, Crossville welcomes us with its unique blend of small-town charm and outdoor recreation, serving as a hub for travelers venturing deeper into the plateau’s forests or seeking respite in the numerous parks dotting the area. Past Crossville, the highlands gradually give way to the descending ridges and valleys of Middle Tennessee. We descend into Cookeville, a bustling town anchored by Tennessee Tech University, marking a return to denser populations and a livelier rhythm of life.

Leaving Cookeville, the ridgelines flatten into a tapestry of fields and small communities like Baxter and Silver Point. We pass near Center Hill Lake, hidden behind hills to our south, before easing west through Gordonsville into Wilson County. The distant skyline of Nashville beckons, but our westward drive concludes at the interchange with Interstate 840 near Lebanon—a strategic loop route that diverts traffic around Nashville’s suburban sprawl.

This stretch of Interstate 40 exemplifies the varied essence of Tennessee—from the shadows of the Smokies, through dynamic Knoxville, across the secluded Cumberland Plateau, and into the welcoming expanse of Middle Tennessee farmland. It’s a route that speaks to the state’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and changing pace, rewarding every traveler with a sense of Tennessee’s soul stitched together by asphalt and history.
