U.S. Highway 79: Altheimer to Pine Bluff – Arkansas

Join us as we head south along U.S. Highway 79 for 11 miles through the farmlands and timbered lowlands of southeast Arkansas, beginning in Altheimer and ending in Pine Bluff. This short but significant route connects two historic Delta communities and includes a scenic crossing of the Arkansas River as we descend into one of the region’s largest industrial centers.

We begin our journey in Altheimer, turning south onto US-79 from its business loop in the heart of town. Altheimer may be a quiet place today, but it has roots going back to the early Delta railroad era and remains a central point for surrounding agriculture. As we leave town, the road immediately opens up to flat farmland dotted with irrigation ditches, occasional grain silos, and stretches of timber. At Rob Roy Road, we curve southwest and cross the Arkansas River on a sweeping bridge that offers a wide view of the river’s lazy, tree-lined banks.

Once over the river, the landscape shifts again as we skirt the perimeter of Evergreen Packaging, one of Pine Bluff’s most prominent employers. This large paper and packaging plant is a defining feature of the southeast side of the city. After navigating the industrial zone and intersecting with Arkansas Highway 81, we continue west toward the Pine Bluff city limits. The final leg of our trip is a gentle approach into the southeastern side of town, ending at the junction with US-65B, which carries travelers deeper into Pine Bluff’s urban grid.

While not a long drive, this stretch of US-79 offers a glimpse into the working backbone of Arkansas’s Delta region—river crossings, factories, and farmland all within a dozen miles. For those passing through or exploring the area, Pine Bluff offers a mix of industrial history, Delta culture, and access to nearby nature preserves like Bayou Bartholomew.
