Westbound Arkansas Highway 10S: Greenwood

Let’s take a quick but informative journey westbound along Arkansas Highway 10S, right through the heart of Greenwood, Arkansas. This brief but busy three-mile stretch gives us a neat cross-section of this friendly town, from its quaint downtown core to its more commercial outskirts — and finally out to the major thoroughfare of U.S. Highway 71.

We kick things off in downtown Greenwood at the corner where Arkansas Highway 10 (known locally as Coker Street) intersects with Arkansas Highway 10S, better known here as Center Street. This part of Greenwood still has that small-town charm: brick storefronts, the city square not far off, and a community that leans heavily on its local businesses. It’s a great area for a quick coffee stop or a stroll around the courthouse square before heading west.

Rolling out of downtown, we quickly transition into a mix of cozy neighborhoods and scattered businesses. For a stretch, Center Street serves as one of Greenwood’s main commercial corridors. A few blocks from the square, you’ll spot a Tractor Supply Co. — a staple in rural Arkansas towns — followed soon after by a Walmart Supercenter, which anchors the retail side of town. Between these big-box stops, you’ll pass smaller local shops, fast food joints, and everyday services that cater to both Greenwood residents and folks from surrounding rural communities.

The road stays mostly level and easy-going, with light traffic typical for a town of this size. As we continue westward, residential pockets give way to more open lots and a few patches of wooded land that hint at the rolling hills beyond Greenwood. Just before we wrap up this short drive, we reach the intersection with U.S. Highway 71 — one of the primary north-south highways in western Arkansas. Here, we swing northbound on US-71, which can carry you up toward Fort Smith or south toward Waldron and the Ouachita Mountains.

For such a brief stretch, Arkansas Highway 10S through Greenwood does a nice job connecting the community’s historic core with its modern conveniences and onward routes for regional travel. Next time you’re passing through the area, consider hopping off the main highway to explore a slice of local Arkansas life — you might find a favorite lunch spot or a scenic backroad to wander.
