Arkansas Highway 36: 8-mile to Rose Bud

Join us as we journey across central Arkansas, traveling 27 scenic miles along Arkansas Highway 36 from its western starting point at U.S. Highway 64 near 8-Mile all the way to Rose Bud. This stretch of highway is a great example of rural Arkansas driving—offering a laid-back ride through farmland, tiny communities, and rolling countryside that’s perfect for anyone looking to experience the state’s more relaxed side.

We kick off our drive at the intersection of U.S. 64 and AR-36, just west of Vilonia at a spot locals know as 8-Mile. The first few miles of Highway 36 wind north and northeast through gently rolling fields dotted with cattle and hay bales, hinting at the region’s strong agricultural roots. Just southeast of Holland, you’ll notice the junction with AR-287—a small highway that meanders west toward the communities of Holland and Enola, both rich in small-town Arkansas charm.

Continuing northeast, AR-36 curves east at the intersection with AR-107 just west of Naylor. If you’re up for a quick detour, AR-107 heads north toward the edge of the Ozark foothills. Back on Highway 36, we soon enter Naylor, a tiny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot with a classic rural vibe. Here you’ll find old farmhouses, quiet roads, and the intersection with AR-310.

Leaving Naylor, the road takes another gentle northeast jog before entering Mt. Vernon. This small town is the kind of place where everyone waves as you pass by, and there’s usually a community event happening at the town center. Mt. Vernon is also where you’ll cross AR-310 again—this time on the east side of town—making it a little crossroads for travelers exploring local routes. North of Mt. Vernon, AR-36 dips and climbs through more open fields and pastures, giving you classic views of Arkansas countryside.

As we approach Rose Bud, the landscape starts to shift with more trees lining the road and small creeks appearing near the highway. Just before entering town, AR-36 intersects AR-124, which branches off to the north, offering another route for exploring White County’s rural backroads. Finally, we roll into Rose Bud itself, a friendly small town with a few local shops, diners, and churches, where Highway 36 meets Arkansas Highway 5. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs or grab a bite before heading out on your next adventure.

Things to See Along the Route:
