U.S. Highway 62: Harrison to Eureka Springs – Arkansas

If you’re looking for a road trip that delivers a blend of small-town charm, rolling Ozark landscapes, and plenty of winding highway action, driving U.S. Highway 62 from Harrison to Eureka Springs is a true Arkansas highlight. This 37-mile stretch is more than just a connector between two destinations—it’s a journey through some of the state’s most inviting communities, scenic farmland, and hidden mountain vistas.

We begin our westbound ride in Harrison, jumping onto U.S. Highway 62 from the junction with U.S. Highway 65. Right out of the gate, this section is also conjoined with U.S. Highway 412, so you’re sharing the road with travelers heading all the way to Springdale or Oklahoma. The route quickly rolls past the intersection with Arkansas Highway 392 and into the town of Alpena. Alpena is your classic small Arkansas community—worth a quick stop if you’re hungry or want to check out a bit of local color. It’s here that U.S. 412 splits off to the southwest, while we stick with US-62 as it turns northwest, hugging the foothills of the Ozarks.

After leaving Alpena, we’re treated to wide-open farmland and gently rolling hills, with scattered barns and the occasional roadside produce stand, especially in the spring and summer months. Soon, we make our way into Green Forest, a friendly town that’s a great pit stop if you need fuel or a bite to eat. Here, US-62 intersects both Arkansas Highway 311 and Highway 103, two routes that can take you deeper into Carroll County’s backroads if you’re in the mood for a detour.

Leaving Green Forest, the scenery starts to change as the road rises and dips—classic Ozark country. Five miles down the line, we arrive in Berryville, another Carroll County hub that’s got its own slice of Arkansas history. Downtown Berryville is full of preserved storefronts, vintage signage, and little shops, making it worth a quick loop if you have time. The route crosses Arkansas Highway 21 here—a major north-south route—and if you look closely, you’ll spot plenty of nods to the region’s past along the way.

West of Berryville, US-62 heads through Pleasant Valley, passing the intersection with Arkansas Highway 143. At this point, the character of the drive shifts. The highway tightens up, winding along a rising ridge with sharper curves and brief glimpses of wooded valleys below. Especially in spring and fall, this segment becomes a showcase for the Ozarks, with wildflowers or turning leaves lining the roadside.

Entering the outskirts of Eureka Springs, US-62 feels almost like a roller coaster—curves stack on curves, and the grade increases as you climb toward town. This area is dotted with quirky roadside attractions, vintage motels, and little craft shops, all hinting at Eureka Springs’ reputation as a historic resort town. If you’re into old-school neon or want a photo op, keep your eyes peeled—there’s something unique around almost every corner.

As we reach the eastern edge of Eureka Springs, the highway threads through a blend of Victorian homes, lush forest, and local businesses before meeting the junction with Arkansas Highway 23 (the famous Pig Trail Scenic Byway for those looking for even more adventure). Here’s where our video ends, but it’s just the start of what Eureka Springs has to offer—don’t miss the historic downtown, the Passion Play, or a stroll through the city’s winding hillside streets.
