Arkansas Highway 89: Lonoke to Cabot

Travelers looking for a scenic and practical drive through the heart of central Arkansas will find Arkansas Highway 89 a worthwhile route. Stretching northward for approximately 19 miles between Lonoke and Cabot, this segment of AR 89 blends small-town charm, rural farmland, and growing suburban development into a compact but rewarding journey. While not a major highway by national standards, this route plays a key role in connecting the agricultural lands near Lonoke to the rapidly expanding city of Cabot.

Our journey begins just outside the city limits of Lonoke, where AR 89 breaks away from US Highway 70. Almost immediately, the character of the route turns rural as the highway threads its way north through fertile farmland and occasional patches of pine and hardwood. Before long, we reach the small crossroads community of Furlow, where AR 89 intersects both Arkansas Highway 15 and AR 294. Though easy to miss if you’re not watching for it, Furlow is a typical example of the kinds of small, agriculturally centered communities that dot this part of the state. The intersection here serves as a key junction for local traffic, especially for farmers hauling goods or residents commuting toward Little Rock or Cabot.

Leaving Furlow behind, the road continues north through a picturesque stretch of countryside that typifies Arkansas’s inland charm. Fields give way to stretches of forest, and occasional homes and churches dot the roadside. It’s a calm and relaxing drive, with minimal traffic and just enough curvature in the road to keep it engaging. As we draw closer to Cabot, the landscape begins to change. What was once quiet farmland transitions into the outer edges of suburbia. Newer residential neighborhoods begin to emerge, and the two-lane road gradually widens to accommodate increasing traffic.

Upon entering Cabot, AR 89 becomes a more developed urban corridor. The highway turns west and becomes West Main Street, the central commercial spine of the city. Here, drivers will find a lively mix of local businesses, chain restaurants, and community landmarks. The street is often bustling with activity, especially during school hours and weekends, as Cabot serves as a bedroom community for the greater Little Rock area. Shortly after crossing the interchange with Interstate 57—our route reaches a notable endpoint at the intersection with Willie Ray Drive. This area serves as a gateway to many of Cabot’s civic and commercial facilities, as well as access points for further travel north or south.

Though our video ends at Willie Ray Drive, Arkansas Highway 89 itself doesn’t stop there. It continues west out of Cabot, transitioning once again into a more rural character. The highway pushes on toward its final destination at Arkansas Highway 107, located just south of Vilonia. This stretch offers yet another peaceful drive, particularly scenic during the fall months when the trees lining the road erupt in color. While the Lonoke-to-Cabot portion may be the most traveled segment of AR 89, the full route offers a nice cross-section of central Arkansas’s natural beauty and local culture.
